I wonder if, even with your vertical antenna, that you are seeing NVIS
propagation?
The fading effect would be consistent with variations in electron density in
the F2 layer over a short period of time.

s/elec352.htm but I have to admit that the maths loses me at times, even
though it looks to have been cut back to only the equations that the author
thinks are essential...
