You mention growing up in the 80's so I'll guess you are bit young to remember this.

A publication, I believe it was NCJ around late 1990's   early 2000's had a listing in each issue

of station owners willing to open their stations to new/less equipped contestors.  I took

advantage of VE3RM's (sk) offer and twice flew up to Ontario and operated his station in

two contest.  A nice friend he became.   I believe this is an idea that someone or some publication

should revive.  I mean is this not one more way to let youngsters know some of us want to give back?

I wonder now if there are any others out there that remember this list and took advantage

of it.   In any case Rich all the best   BoB  WA1FCN

Im not seeing what the concern is with respect to a multi-multi. Lets be
honest, many of the new kids who we've managed to get into the hobby are
not putting up huge towers at their home QTHs and they're not independently
making thousands of QSOs from home. Many of them are 1) teens who have to
get approval from the parents for a station (which requires money), and 2)
located in suburbs where HOAs rule the day and many of them CANNOT
effectively get on the air even if they wanted to from their homes in the
traditional sense of getting on the air.

When I was growing up in the 1980s, I had supportive parents but lived an
area where ham radio was granted with only indifference. I had a TA33-Jr
mounted on a roof tower which was - at best - 25 feet in the air. If you
wanted to make a "splash", more often than not you had to go to a host QTH
where an established ham had a couple of towers and some read hardware.
K6XT was the guy who really guided me along and I've been grateful to Art
ever since. Beyond Art there was Rick Craig's QTH (N6ND).

That a station owner is willing to open his station(s) up to new contesters
should be commended - not chastised.

Hi Ray,

I think you and the rest of the teams that entered the Multi-Operator
Distributed category did a really amazing thing inviting young people.
Facilitating that, is above and beyond anything we usually do as
contesters.
What you guys did serves a higher purpose.
Hopefully others will follow, on-site and remote.
Congratulations.

5/17 M/M that posted on 3830 operated distributed. So basically 30% of

M/M experimented in this category. I’m already in contact - they reached
out to us from M/M stations in Europe on how to do.

My post is about the excitement it has generated with young people and
some of us OM. We have a youth program that is growing just not here in
the
USA but worldwide. The very first dedicated youth station is on the air
from Europe (Croatia) for young hams under the age of 26. We are doing
the
same with generous hams or organizations in England, Norway, Puerto Rico
and USA right now, these locations will come online soon. It gets even
better, youths are giving back to youths. We have a few youths on the
program that have opened up their own personal station(s) for other
youths
to enjoy. Anyone that follows me on social media knows about all of this.

We’re not doing this alone, we have generous station owners,
organizations
and Flex Radio all joining forces to make this happen. We have an
announcement forthcoming on the organizations that have joined forces.

Young people are attracted to contesting - it’s like gaming to them. Just
look at CWT results - you have some playing with the best in the world.
Two
of the youths actually experimented in a M/2 distributed in CWT at the
0300
session this Weds and made 300 Q’s and 70,000+ points but didn’t submit a
score because the category doesn’t exist, they did it to have fun. These
are just some of the cool things you may not be hearing or seeing but
it’s
actually happening.

This is my last post on this subject here. You can follow us on FB or
Twitter to get the latest updates on what’s happening.

How is a DM any different than a Multi-Multi
Operator mentoring/learning and camaraderie are present at a physical
multi. Far less so
A physical multi is usually a superior station, so builds operator
skill
by providing higher rate.
My objections have nothing to do with technology, it's about more calls
to work. A DM provides one call to work. Those same stations signing
their
own calls increase the number of active stations, making the contest more
fun for the rest of us.
