I don't think Ray is being criticized about opening his stations on
Remote Ham Radio to new (youth) contesters. He has lots of enthusiasm
about doing that. Good for him.
I think the whole issue that K9YC pointed out is the concept of a
distributed contesting from multiple station locations category. As K5ZD
pointed out "Distributed MM is likely never going to be a major
category." So it's really just a fad. As I pointed out in a couple of my
emails Ray's vision of allowing youth contesters to operate from a big
gun station would have been better served by organizing seven different
Multi-Multis from the stations he has on his Remote Ham Radio network.
That would have allowed even more new contesters to participate in his
endeavor.
I'm a living example of someone who was taken in (and mentored) by some
big time contesters in my youth. To this day I've still never owned a
tower at my home QTH ( I chose family stuff over radio) but despite this
I seem to do pretty good in some contests from an all wire station. I
attribute that to what I learned during the days I got to operate at
some nice big gun stations such as K3LR, K8CC, KW8N, N2NU, KS8S, W8AV,
W8FN, NQ4I, WW4LL etc..

ever since. Beyond Art there was Rick Craig's QTH (N6ND).
That a station owner is willing to open his station(s) up to new contesters
should be commended - not chastised.

My post is about the excitement it has generated with young people and
some of us OM. We have a youth program that is growing just not here in

USA but worldwide. The very first dedicated youth station is on the air
from Europe (Croatia) for young hams under the age of 26. We are doing
the
same with generous hams or organizations in England, Norway, Puerto Rico
and USA right now, these locations will come online soon. It gets even
better, youths are giving back to youths. We have a few youths on the
program that have opened up their own personal station(s) for other
youths
to enjoy. Anyone that follows me on social media knows about all of this.
We’re not doing this alone, we have generous station owners,
organizations
and Flex Radio all joining forces to make this happen. We have an
announcement forthcoming on the organizations that have joined forces.
Young people are attracted to contesting - it’s like gaming to them. Just
look at CWT results - you have some playing with the best in the world.
Two
of the youths actually experimented in a M/2 distributed in CWT at the
0300
session this Weds and made 300 Q’s and 70,000+ points but didn’t submit a
score because the category doesn’t exist, they did it to have fun. These
are just some of the cool things you may not be hearing or seeing but
it’s
actually happening.

A physical multi is usually a superior station, so builds operator
skill

My objections have nothing to do with technology, it's about more calls
to work. A DM provides one call to work. Those same stations signing
their
own calls increase the number of active stations, making the contest more
fun for the rest of us.
