The optical mice are sensitive to the surface they are used on.  Just about 
anything shiny can cause problems.

On the other hand, if the computer in question had a PS/2 port to plug a 15 
year old mouse into, the USB port and its driver could be the problem.  PS/2 
ports disappeared altogether quite some years ago and the USB spec has 
undergone some changes in the interim.

My experience does not match Joe's.

Like Joe, I used a Logitech Marble trackball for years. I was delighted.

Like Joe, I switched to a wireless Logitech trackball. I am delighted. NO
issues. No lags. No RFI and my shack is very high RF intensity--nearest
wire element less than ten feet away. No anything.

My wife didn't like the mouse tail. I bought a Logitech wireless mouse for
the office computer. NO issues.
