Grid squares are essentially a form of distance scoring. If the contesting
community wants to move to a sub-grid type of scoring system, then I suggest to
concentrate on the higher frequencies, where a distance system might make more
sense.
Realistically, you may want to concentrate on the August UHF, which would
benefit from the increased activity. Experiment there, to see if people realy
would like such a system, or just become too confused by it.

How about using the August UHF Contest for a test CWAC?
Most folks coordinate on 2 meters anyway, and I'm sure there would be
few complaints of moving stations to 6 even though it wouldn't count for
"official" credit.
Also, the UHF contest could use a boost in activity, from what I
understand. Plus, all of those UHF and microwave ops would likely be
very familiar with their 6 digit grid.
