One day, while reading the mail on 20 m, I heard MS-Windows sounds and
thought it was my MS-Windows laptop ... until I heard a synthesised DX
spot. The audio was coming over the radio!
I realized that it was one of the ops in the QSO. I broke in and let him
know what was happening and he gratefully acknowledged me and shut off the
sounds. A good lesson in the perils of AFSK operation under MS-Windows!
I've since switched to FSK myself, so this is no longer a danger, though I
still keep the audio off.
I like the suggestion of using QSD as a convention to let other ops know
that their RTTY "signals are mutilated" and will try to do so myself.
