TV's with rabbit ear antennas were a big problem back then, despite the
broadcast towers being line of sight just a few miles away. Those
neighbors with outdoor antenna never had a problem, ever right next
door. The only explanation I could think of was that various poorly
bonded pieces of metal near the rabbit ears, perhaps in the walls, were
generating harmonics. Rabbit ears also picked up all sorts of
reflections, which even the simplest of outdoor antennas would fix.
My most recent TVI complaint was just after the switch to digital TV,
maybe 10 years ago. A neighbor to the NE had a set top converter and
rabbit ears, which I could wipe out with 10 W on 10 meters. A bunch of
ferrite cores on the cables took care of it at 1500 W, and I even got my
ferrite cores back eventually.
Thankfully, TVI just doesn't seem to be an issue any more.

Cable TV cured a lot of TVI complaints. I had put up an antenna when we moved in a house
around 1991. Neighbor’s son knocked on my door and said my ham radio was interfering
with his mother’s TV. I invited him in and showed him the end of the antenna cable and
radio in the box.
Turns out main TV was on cable (no interference) and his mother’s TV was using
rabbit ears and location at base of hill in direction of TV transmitters. Snowy
picture from lack of signal.

A now-Silent Key coworker once told me whenever he erected a new antenna, he
left the coax outside and unterminated for a week or so, you know, to let the
psychosomatic RFI complainants show up at his door so he could show them the

complaint, at least until the next antenna went up.

Back in 1989, when I put up a tower and got back on the air, I had numerous RFI
complaints, mainly landline telephones, stereo systems, etc. Only afterwards
did it occur to me that I should have put some antennas in the attic and gotten
on the air a lot with the amplifier. Then when the tower went up, the RFI
problems would have been LESS severe!
Fortunately, in recent years, despite my increased activity, I've had virtually
no RFI complaints. Sadly, the RFI is now going in the other direction.
