Steve Anderson, W1EMI, is a member of the broadcasters AM Improvement Working
Group. One of their concerns is the increasing noise levels. In ARRL's
measurements of noisy devices, we have often found that they "pass" emissions
limits above 1.5 MHz, but fail below that frequency. Now that we have a
mechanism to report these more effectively to the FCC, we can encourage the
broadcast industry to join in. Now that we have 630 and 2200 meter amateur
allocations, our standing to complain about excessive noise below 1.5 MHz is
also enhanced.
By my guess, most "ignition" noise in modern vehicles is from fuel injectors,
not spark systems, based mostly on the sound.

Whenever I hear a particularly vicious ignition signal on the bands, it's
usually a Ford driving past my QTH.

I'm a longtime member of SBE (Society of Broadcast Engineers). That
fight by AM broadcasters has been going on for decades, and they keep on
losing. At least 30 years ago, the Chief Engineer of 50kW WLS licensed
to Chicago, told me that he was fighting noise from Ford ignition
systems that was so bad that the station was being wiped out in their
across town!
