This is certainly a big part of the problem, and as implied, not caused by the contest.

Some may still be using old versions of the software that won't pick up the sequence from the RR73. Others are on a mission to enforce their standards, like here on the list, they are hams too after all. LOL

I have actually tested this in the past. I have on occasion 'fed' the other guy with RR73 for a few cycles, then changed to the 'standard definition', and the contact completes right away. Yes, propagation may have been a factor once, maybe twice, no... make that three times plus, but not always.

Being a 'live and let live' kind of a guy, I let them do what they want, and I do what I want. I have 'enjoyed' some loooong incomplete contacts since adopting this behaviour. ROTFLM

Some insist on a 73 both ways. I get NIL from quite a few in regular FT8 (non contest) as they insist on the final additional 73. I usually use RR73 which saves a sequence and thus 15-30 seconds.
