I prefer vacuum relays outside, they are immune to corrosion and not that
expensive when ex military stock from Russia like B1B or B2B SPST types.

I think that the point was that the expensive vacuum relay could be 
replaced by a much cheaper open frame relay arrangement in this 
application, where high impedance/voltage is not in the equation.

Tens of dollars versus hundreds of dollars makes good sense when the 
lightning comes to town.
