At my home station, a pair of Jennings 75-amp/7KV vacuum relays are placed in series with about 12 inches of separation between relays for added lightning protection. It's the equivalent of having two knife switches in series and they switch together in tandem. It may be wishful thinking, but I figured two gaps would mitigate a lightning surge better than a single relay gap.
