Some amps biased the 811A's at -4.5 vdc. To run the 572B's, disconnect the bias and ground the pins. Reference WB2EGZ article in 73 back in 1966. You might want to short across input filter choke to raise HV, as the 572B's like higher voltage than the 811A's.

John and Mary Powell writes:

Carlos my late father, ZL1ACP re-tubed his 30L1 with 572B's without
modification and the amp ran fine. He late sold it as re-tubed with no
adverse comment from the purchaser.

I'd be interested in your data file if you build one. I don't have one.

So far have not found one. Am somewhat confused by Gain parameter.
Have no idea what that I but if it is power gain, then I suppose 100W in
giving 1500W out yields a power gain of 15.

Next to do the VgIg interpolation for 8 Ia values and 2 Va values.

Name = GS35B (Name of File, use DOS conventions
.TUB extension automatically added)

VB Max = 4500 (Maximum Plate Voltage Rating)

VB Low = 400 (From Grounded Grid Constant Current
Characteristics curves.

VB High = 1200 (From Grounded Grid Constant Current
Characteristics curves. ~ 2 to 3 * VB Low)

Gain = 15 (Tube Amplification Factor)

Cin = 21.5 (Grid-Cath Capacitance in pF)
Cout = 4.5 (Grid-Plate Capacitance in pF)

PDiss = 1500 (Max Plate Dissipation of Device)
GDiss = 26 (Max Grid Dissipation of Device)

I just purchased a fixer upper Collins 30L-1 amp. It has a bad power
switch
and it may need tubes. I have a brand new set of 572B here. Is it OK to
just drop the 572B's in place of the 811's or do I have to mod the amp in
any way? I am still looking for a power switch. If you have one contact
me
direct.

Thanks,
Carlos. KF4RRN

Carlos: I can't help you with the switch , but yes, you can run the 572B's
without any mods, it's just that it's kind of a waste of good tubes.I
wouldn't buy new 572B's , but as long as you've got them you can use them.
If it were mine I'd use the tubes only until I could get a new set of
811A's.
There is one item that could be fatal to your exciter if you have a
modern
solid state rig. the 30-L1 keying ckt uses 120 volts for the ant. relay.
I'd strongly suggest you look into the use of "soft keying" setup to
reduce
the keying voltage requirements. you need to look closely at things like
the
filter caps, and any sign of overheating or other damage also.!!!
good luck with your project.!!!

Thanks for the quick reply and info on the tubes Carl. As for the relay,
yes, I never connect an older amp to a newer radio direct, even when some
of
them do work. I have the little Ameritron amp interface that works with
my
SB-220 and L-4B. I am sure it would works just fine with the Collins.
Hopefully I'll get to buy me a Collins radio to go with the amp--wishful
thinking-- and then I won't have to worry about it. ;>

I'd like to thank all those who replied to my problem. I
downloaded, and tried, several programs but then had a
flash of insight. Since the graphs are designed to be
rotated 90 deg for viewing anyway, why not scan them in
that way to begin with. I tried it and it works fine!

Again thanks to all.

Greg .. those amps are FAMOUS for un-soldering their own components ...
check for that problem .. a nice hefty iron will cure a bunch of problems!
I had 2wo of those that did that! 73 .. Mark, AA6DX

Hello List
I am looking for recommendations on who does good amplifier repair work. I
have a completely modified sb200 set up for 6 meters.I know about Harbachs
but they are out of business for a while due to wx damages. Any help would
be appreciated.
Thanks
Bob

Try Milton, N4DA, at <http://www.n4da.com>

He does good work, has lots of experience and servicing ham gear is his
business.

In trying to use TAP2 program, the question of the amplification factor
comes up as it is requested in the data entry. I cannot find it speced
anywhere for the gs35b. Anybody know what it is?
