The typical problem is the PLL PC board. Specifically the PLL Major Loop
board. Depending on band, VCO, A, B, C or D can be involved. VCO A is for
160 & 80, VCO B is for 40 & 30, VCO C is for 20, 17 & 15, and VCO D is for
12 & 10. There is 2 FETS and 2 coils associated with each VCO along with
a few other components. Removing the coil assy and the two FETS and then
cleaning the pads, re-tinning and then re-installing the devices will
usually cure the problem. A delicate and time consuming project but well
worth it in the end. Also, the VCO's will require alignment.
History and many say simply to re-flow the solder. Well this works for a
while but the original corrosion is still in place and will eventually fail
again. That is why complete removal and cleaning and re-tinning is
necessary for a permanent fix.
These are great sounding and great performing radios when they are correctly
aligned and problems are resolved.

Subject: [TenTec] paragon PLL error - Help me decide!
hi, i have the chance of picking up a ten tec paragon (585) for a decent
price. the radio works fine, but the owner claims it comes up with a PLL
lock error message and then i guess it disappears - is this an easy fix? i
am handy with a soldering iron and would like to try a fix myself. the radio
is in excellent condition. i had a paragon II and loved it - sold it off
because i received an offer i couldn't refuse. thanks in advance - john
