I've mentioned this story before but the Haitian cellular provider for which
I worked in the late 90s actually posted armed (scatter guns) guards at
each of its cell sites to preclude copper ground wire and diesel fuel theft.

I was a new ham, in high school, in WV, and another ham a few years older
was the engineer for a 5 kW AM station a mile or so from where I lived. He
had to replace the ground system for his single tower antenna because
thieves would dig it up and steal it. He found the wire for sale by a
neighborhood junk dealer. He buried a new set of radials, and the cycle
repeated. He even took to parking near the site at night with a shotgun.
