Steve,
I've spliced a *lot* of 1/4" superflex using one technique, and it
should work for 1/2" heliax. Go to the hobby shop and get a short length
of brass tubing that just fits over the center conductor (They should
have an assortment from really small to sorta large). Get another piece
that just fits over the shield. Strip back the outer jacket on one side
for perhaps three inches - this is where you are going to "park" the
brass outer sleeve while you solder the center conductor sleeve. Strip
back the outer jacket on the other piece perhaps 1-1/2", exposing the
copper jacket. Trim both coax ends so there is perhaps 1/4" of
dielectric and an additional 1/2" of center conductor showing. This
means that when the two center conductor ends are butted together, there
will be a gap of approximately 1-1/2" between the ends of the outer
conductors. Cut a 2" or 2-1/4" length of the large tubing, and park it
out of the way on the stripped-back cable. Cut a 3/4" piece of the short
tubing and symmetrically solder it in place, joining the center
conductor. Slide the larger tube back over the gap between the cables,
and gently solder it completely to the copper shield on both ends. A
cold rag for heatsinking is probably a good idea. If you wanted to put
adhesive-filled heat shrink over the splice, well you should have
thought of that earlier! (BTDT)...

Subject: [TowerTalk] Splicing LDF4
Anyone have some good tricks for splicing Andrew LDF4 1/2" Heliax ?
This would be for HF use, only - not worried about a small impedance
bump.
