I agree that this would be a good test, but given the hassle I would opt for
trying a different power supply first -- provided the resistances still
check out OK and SteppIR endorses the test. If you can lay your hands on the
right kind of power supply, this would be a quick, easy test.
If you decide to cut the cable at the tower, an alternative to a generator
would be a car battery and an AC inverter capable of delivering 120VAC at a
minumum of 1.5A (i.e., at least 180W.)
