There ARE female UHF (as well as N) cable connectors -- both in the
crimp-on series as well as the clamp-on series. Obviously they are
not as common but in some applications they save the cost and
the reliability hit of a barrel connector. Joel at The RF Connection
can probably set you up with them.
I have been VERY happy with crimp-on connectors. As long as you
use the right tool and do it right.
