At least 2 rotor manufacturers (Orion, Spid) have used a simple pulse
encoder scheme for some time instead of a pot strip indicator. A
magnetically actuated reed switch generates pulses when the rotor turns
that are fed to pulse counting circuitry in the rotor controller.
