Thanks. I see what you mean! That's not much of a pattern.

I'm far from being an NEC expert. But everything I've ever read indicates that 
ANY version of NEC is simply not yet advanced to the point where it can model 
wires close to the earth with any degree of accuracy.

Why don't you lay a 200' wire on the ground, aimed towards your area of 
interest? Bury the radials at each end (no more than an inch or two), and see 
what you can hear? :-)
