*Sony, was the start of the VLSI movement with SMD, Video and Audio
Processors. I had the privilege of working on top of the line Sony
Camcorders at a Sony Premier Dealership. ( before the Cheap VHS stuff took
over the market ) All I ever needed was a hot air gun and sharp dental
pick. It was mostly a matter of see, smell and experience. We had lots of
dead boards to practice on. Another trick we really liked was the use of a
small stainless steel wire. Running the wire under all the pins on one side
and then unsolder the pins one at a time while keeping constant pressure on
the wire to lift and clear the pins. It takes skill and patience but it can
be done. With proper cleaning afterward, I would sometimes challenge the
other Tech's to point out the IC that we had changed. This has nothing to
do with the problem at hand however. I will agree with Carl, Connectors and
Connections. We have found several problems where the Ribbon part of the
cable loses connection at the connector. Just something to look for. Also,
the little tiny coax connectors which the little cables plug into on the
board, have a tendency to develop open connections between the center pin
and the circuit board trace. This can happen very easily with continued
plugging and unplugging or being pulled on just the tiniest bit too
hard. We first found this failure in a Kenwood back in the early
90's... Sure hope this info helps.*
