"Two great nations, divided by a common language."
(Winston Churchill said it, but it has also been attributed to George
Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde).
Fact: in 1887, in his book "The Canterville Ghost", Oscar Wild wrote: "We
have really everything in common with America nowadays except, of course,
language". Not quite the same. Shaw was quoted in 1942 using those
specific words.
In any case this example proves the point.
1) I'll ring you up on Saturday
2) I'll bell you up on Saturday
3) I'll knock you up on Saturday
These three phrases supposedly mean about the same thing.
In my books there are significant differences in some of these! (hi)
