Well,
Actually,
the venerable D-104 without an amplifier was a very respected AM ham radio
mike before CB was ever a gleam in the FCC eye! Dating to the 30's it still
does get rave audio reports on my Ten Tec Scout, and other rigs. Perhaps the
one that had the poorer frequency response was an AMPLIFIED D-104, the curse
of the CB craze.
Also, since the D-104 element was crystal, it can degrade with exposure to
high humidity, and heat.
If you do replac the element with a Heil or similar, which is a more closely
controlled, speech only low fi mike, (which is best for voice clarity), I
would gladly take the D-104 element for a spare!
