That's the characteristic of the D-104. It was designed for AM
transmitters to compensate for receivers being a bit narrow and rolling
off the highs (but more gently than with mechanical or crystal filters).
You may be accentuating the problem by loading with too low an impedance
at the radio. I replaced the cartridge with a Shure R-5 and get a far
better quality sound, though that Shure cartridge is no longer available
as far as I can find.
