Allan, that is designed into the D104. It is a high-impedance crystal
mike that has a very peaked response curve in the voice-frequency range.
There really isn't much you can do about it except change mics. The D104
works very well for pileup and DX operation where you need a penetrating
sound to be heard, but can be tiresome for rag-chewing as you are
finding.

It is always possible to use a mic preamp-equalizer such as the W2IHY
unit advertised in QST each month. I have one and it is excellent. It can
do a lot to flatten the response curve and bring up some lower
frequencies. But at $230+ you might want to invest instead in another
mic.
