While ice de-tunes antennas, the SWR is usually far less than 3 to 1.
Therefore, the antenna efficiency is still quite good. I haven't let ice keep
me off-the-air during one of my favorite contests. Just reduce power and
if possible use an antenna tuner. Even a poor built-in antenna tuner found
in many of todays xceivers can handle the small amount of detuning that
ice creates. "Been there, done that" numerous times, made lots Qso's and it
was always a great deal more fun then missing the contest. WPX-RTTY is a
fantastic contest, I encourage you NOT to miss it!

Absolutely unbelievable.
RTTY has now regressed into a operation of lids. I am on 24 mHz and set
up about nearly a kHz above the D2 who was working simplex. Asked if the
frequency was in use, and it wasn't. Called CQ, and then a kilocycle
Kop came by and asked me to QSY. Seems I am S9 +40 in the midwest. And
since this idiot doesn't (a) identify until I started talking to him,
and (b) doesn't own filters. He evidently doesn't have real antennas
either as old Spokane is hardly in the direction of Angola!
Life is unlucky if you can't operate RTTY within 750 cycles of another
station. Order some filters. By the way, using 100 watts into a
vertical.

The RTTY group is exceptionally well-behaved, Charlie. We have over 1100
members and in my seven years as moderator, I have had to put only one
person on moderated status for personal attacks, and he has since
cleaned up his act and is now un-moderated. There are still a few people
on moderated status because some kind of virus took over their computer
and started sending out spam.

I found that Bill has been a respectful moderator. I don't
say that lightly. Bill tolerates opinions on the list that
are at times vastly different from his own. When dealing
with many of us (who at times are very opinionated) he has
been very polite and often quite helpful.
Now, that being said, it shouldn't go to his head.

I recently swapped in an IC7100 as my number two radio, replacing an
IC7000 that will be going mobile.
I also just took the station out for a very quick test-drive in the 2200Z
practice session, the first time I've worked RTTY on the 7100.
The 7100 is OK. The receiver and filtering isn't as good as my primary
rig, a K3, but it is somewhat better than the 7000's. Being able to tap on
the touch screen to cycle among wide/medium/narrow filters is kind of
nifty, as is the on-screen decoding on the larger screen...but those are bells
and whistles if the contest logging software is set up suitably. I'm kind
of disappointed that they didn't make the TPF filter a toggleable option
from the touchscreen, however-- still need to dig through a menu, or make use
of a macro.
When my 7000 was my one-and-only HF rig, I tended to run it at reduced
power if running a frequency in a RTTY test, due to the heating issues. My
quick test wasn't long enough to determine if the 7100 will require similar
treatment.
