Choice of phonetics also matter. In general, phonetics that include a 
"hard" consonant work better than those without. While my recorded 
messages are Yankee Charlie, both are often mis-copied, and I find that 
I must substitute Yokohama or Canada. When I stray from something on one 
of the various standard lists, I find that well-known place names with a 
hard consonant work best (the K in Yokohama and C in Canada). For our 
club's call, KU6W, United works better than Uniform, thanks to the hard 
T in united. 
And, of course, a prefix that's unique among active contesters is a big 
plus in WPX.
