I believe that we should all operate the way we like. One way is not
better than another. They are just different.
Not all who chose to operate in the "Traditional" format are advocating
for the removal of spotting and other advances in the hobby, many just
prefer to operate without packet, computers, keyers, etc and that is great!
Lets not place all the blame for "all that is wrong" with DXing or
Contesting on the spotting systems or technological advances. We have
had had ops, lids, jammers et al long before the advent of the
clusters. The issue is the people not the technology.
To those who took offense to the term backwardness, please accept my
apology.
Lets all have fun!

What was the exact time where it was just a operator and a radio?
1940, 1950, 1960? Was that before keyers, paddles, voice recorders,
computer logging, 2m spotting nets, telephones to call and make
scheds, the mail system?
I have to wonder if the proponents for backwardness also drive Model A
and Model T cars, use wood stoves and have no indoor plumbing.
The hobby is constantly changing and evolving and we continue to
create new technologies. We don't shun advances in our daily lives we
should we do so in Ham Radio?

Exactly. Like it was in Classic days before spotting systems came to be.

My understanding is that the "Classic" overlay was intended as "a

I would just add one point. I've been told that the 1 radio no
spotting
caveats were added because some folks on the CQ Committee were
concerned
that non-assisted hot-shots would drop down to the 24-hour overlay
unless these things were outlawed. I frankly doubt this, particularly
with respect to the assisted/non-assisted angle. However, instead of
sitting on the sidelines, it is important that supporters of the
24-hour
category enter it this year, so that we can credibly make the argument
for loosening that restriction next time.
