To the list:? The most popular amplifier is the 40-55watt unit offered by
Pyrojoe which draws up to? 19 Amps regardless of drive. He has had a lower
power unit which gets about 15-20 watts out at considerably less draw.
Currently my lower power unit draws only 8 amps. He may still have the lower
power unit which I feel works out better for my rover station powered by
batteries. The pricing works out a little better, too.

Hi All,

We are always adding to the rover and hope to complete some additions in
time for the September contest. We should end up with amplifiers for 200+
watts on 903, 150 watts on 1296, and the addition of a 2304 transverter
and Amp at 40-60 watts.

Looking towards the future, after September, we plan to add 3456 with a
DEMI Transverter. Does anyone know of a low cost source for solid state
12 or 24 volt dc amplifiers for this band? If so please pass it along.

Thanks and 73,

Jim K3LFO

The Toshiba amplifiers for 3456 are great (bulletproof) and are available
from PyroJoe (look for pyrojospeh on eBay) and some other sources. They
have typically been $100-200 for a 40-50W Amplifier. I personally have two
of these I have built into amateur amplifiers (one I loan out) and have
built a similar setup for another ham and all work well. One is at the top
of a 120' tower in a waterproof box I built with N5YA and it sets in the
Texas sun all day buy has performed without a hitch.

I second Steve's comments on the Toshiba 3456 solid state amp from PyroJoe.
My home/rover station using one with a DB6NT transverter. You have to
mount it to an appropriate heat sink and there are some minor internal
adjustments as I recall, but all very straight forward with info both from
PyroJoe as well as on the Internet. After the days of 200 mW, its fun to
see the current meter go up to 20 amps when you hit the PTT.

Remember if you get the Pyro Joe amp that it only needs a milliwatt or so of
drive, so you can get the DEMI transverter as the "low power" version and
save some $$. Of course that means you would have to use it all the time
with the amp, but that was probably the intent. Also remember the Toshiba
amp runs on 12 volts and is class A so it draws 20 amps continuously when
the PTT line is keyed, so your distribution system need to keep that in
mind.. And the Toshiba amp needs a really good heatsink (seeing that it is
dissipating a couple hundred watts of heat!!!) Other than that, the amp is
totally bulletproof! and a bargain...

This weekend is the ARRL's UHF contest. This fun event runs from 1800 UTC
Aug 4 to 1800 UTC Aug 5. It's only a 24 hour contest, so do not think
about getting on Sunday evening to hand out a few contacts because its over
by then ! Here in the Midwest, that's 1:00 pm Sat to 1:00 pm Sunday.
Full contest rules can be found on the League's website at
http://www.arrl.org/contests/rules/2007/uhf.html .

Last years UHF contest was the third consecutive year of increased logs and
the sixth highest log total in the 29 year history of this contest. Can
we make it four years of growth ? Only if you get on, make some contacts,
AND send in your log. No log is to small to send in.

Regarding sending in your logs, please remember that if you use electronic
logging then you must submit an electronic log. However, if you paper log
you CAN submit a paper log. The League's website for paper forms (log
sheet and summary sheet) is at http://www.arrl.org/contests/forms/ . You
can print out your own paper forms, fill them out and send them in. The
League also offers a web site where you can enter your paper log manually
and convert it to electronic form. That link can be found at
www.b4h.net/cabforms . So you can see there are three different ways to
get your log into the League ..... electronic , paper, or via their Web
Applet tool.

New this year, the NLRS is sponsoring a 1st and 2nd place Limited Rover
award. This is a first time event and our goal is to increase activity by
encouraging roving. A "limited" rover has been defined as a rover who
has no more than three bands (of their own choosing) and who submits a log
to the ARRL. Full rules can be found at our clubs website at
http://www.nlrs.org/LimitedRover/index.htm .

Good luck to everyone this weekend, rover's please drive safe.

I have extremely limited time this weekend but I hope to make a FEW QSO's.
I doubt I will get more than an hour in this one. That's better than
nothing ...

I'm looking forward to it. I will be on the hill at K1WHS again
trying to improve my contesting skills.

My loss is your gain (no pun intended) with this great antenna.

I've decided not to setup a rover at this time and therefore have this
great 5-element end-mount beam for 144MHz available for sale. I've
assembled it but it has never seen RF other than the small amount from
my MFJ-259B. It's been leaning up against the wall in my shack since
last month.

I bought the kit new from Dave last month for $110 and will sacrifice
it for quick sale at only $80. You come pick up in Manchester, NH or
meet me at K1WHS this weekend for it. Although the boom can be broken
down, the elements aren't easily removed so I don't want to go through
the hassle of trying to find a box for it to ship.
