Jerry,

From your note below "...each time I open a mmtty-plug-in window and then
try to either change the TNC settings from rttyrite or try to close the mmtty window..." I suspect you are doing the wrong thing.

If you have XMMT.ocx installed on your machine DO NOT open a MMTTY plug in window. Instead open a RttyRite window and then click on "TU type". In the list that opens DO NOT select MMTTY as this is the plug in. Instead select the XMMT.ocx choice and then click on TNC setup at the top of the list. Use the window that opens to select your configurations for MMTTY and 2Tone by checking the right boxes and using Browse to navigate to the correct location of MMTTY and 2Tone exe files.

ED, et al

Please notice that I did follow the advice being given and removed the [rttyrite...] sections in the writelog.ini in the virtual store location. That did not help. So then I removed the entire writelog.ini to let writelog rebuild. That did not work either!

This is a Windows 7 Pro platform.

In the two attempts I have made, I have restarted writelog many times and each time I open a mmtty-plug-in window and then try to either change the TNC settings from rttyrite or try to close the mmtty window by changing tnc to stereo soundboard AFSK rttyrite freezes requiring Task Manager to kill it. The mmtty window will then close ok.

So it is more than the first time writelog is started after an install. This was a full install (over writelog 11.08) as my key had expired. So I don't know what happens with just an upgrade.

One full install was to the ...Program Files... location and one was to my c:\HamPrograms directory.

What other tests can I do to help locate this issue?

In rereading our messages carefully, I do see a slight difference in what I did vs what you said. I believe I deleted the [rtty...] sections before starting writelog and rttyrite - not after the first freeze and kill process step.

I do not have multiple versions of writelog in different directories - I did uninstall when I want to put writelog back where I wanted in c:\HamPrograms.

Thanks to everyone who is trying to sort this out.

From the mail I think several of us are having the same
problem with 11.10.

The basic problem is rttyrite freezes up when its tnc menu is touched.

Yes, this has been reported by several people here on the reflector. I also
experience this once in a while when I'm stressing the software with my
testing on various PCs. THE SOLUTION THAT HAS ALWAYS WORKED FOR ME IS TO:

1. CLOSE WRITELOG.
2. OPEN WRITELOG.INI WITH A TEXT EDITOR. (WRITELOG.INI IS IN THE WINDOWS
DIRECTORY ON XP AND EARLIER. ON VISTA AND LATER, USE THE LINK TO
WRITELOG.INI ON THE WRITELOG MENU IN YOUR PROGRAMS MENU FROM THE WINDOWS
START BUTTON.)
3. FIND ALL [Rttyrite...] SECTIONS AND DELETE THEM SAVE WRITELOG.INI AND
EXIT THE TEXT EDITOR.
4. OPEN WRITELOG AND SETUP YOUR RTTYRITE WINDOW(S) AGAIN.

NOTE: DON AND I SUSPECT THIS PROBLEM IS COMMON TO VISTA/WINDOWS 7/WINDOWS 8 SYSTEMS THAT USE THE VIRTUALSTORE. IT WOULD HELP US TRACK DOWN THE PROBLEM IF THIS IS TRUE. HAS ANYONE HAD THE FREEZE ISSUE ON WINDOWS XP (OR EARLIER
OS)?

I ALSO SUSPECT IT MAY ONLY HAPPEN WHEN YOU START WRITELOG THE FIRST TIME
AFTER AN INSTALL OR UPGRADE. PLEASE ALSO CONFIRM OR DENY THIS?

Sorry for the caps. I don't mean to shout, but several of us have posted
this advice many times in the last four days and it doesn't seem to be
noticed. ;>)

I am just trying to get mmtty plug-in to work the same as it
has for me in 11.08.

Upgrading to 11.10G should require nothing unless you incur the freezing
problem. MMTTY with the MMTTY Plug-In will continue to work without change.
Make sure 'MMTTY' is checked on the Rttyrite TNC menu. Do not use the
XMMT.ocx menu choice if you want to use the MMTTY Plug-In.

This morning, I uninstalled 11.08 again (after making a
backup) because it went in the wrong directory yesterday.

I then installed 11.10 in c:\HamPrograms\Writelog\ I deleted
the [rttyrite] and [rttyrite2] sections from the writelog.ini
in ...virtualStore... and saved it.

I then started writelog and opened a rttyrite window. Then
selected mmtty. Had to point to the proper directory (I did
not reinstall mmtty).
The rtty control panel for mmtty opened.

But as soon as I try to go to TNC Setup to adjust the mmtty
appearance, rttyrite freezes!

When I also go to the Stereo Soundboard AFSK option, rttyrite
freezes (that was the original problem I had).

And somewhere along the line I had to reinstall the mmtty
plugin because I was getting errors messages about "failed to
create custom ... tnc header"

Also I have been unable to save the size and location of the
rttyrite window using the Save Configuration option.

I deleted the writelog.ini in ...virtualStore... to let
writelog build a new one. But that did not solve the problem.

So basically I can not get back to the configuration of mmtty
that I had with 11.08.

Any ideas???? Meanwhile I have regressed back to writelog 11.08

I assume your OS is Vista or later since you mention VirtualStore. If I
understand the description of your actions and problems, it sounds like you did not delete the [Rttyrite...] sections in writelog.ini after you got the freeze. I understand you deleted the entire writelog.ini. That's not the
same thing, so please try the instructions above when you encounter the
freeze. Your goal, after a freeze, is to edit the working writelog.ini
file, not delete it. Deleting it probably means that WriteLog reverts to
initializing with the default writelog.ini file stored in Windows in an
earlier installation.

I'm also a bit nervous about multiple installations of WriteLog in different directories. I don't know how the Registry and VirtualStore behave in that
case. If it were me, I'd uninstall all of them and only have one on the
computer at a time.

Someone commented re: cleaning the registry values. Is that necessary?

I haven't heard this and I would relegate this to a last resort and only if you get clear instructions from someone really understands what to do. For
me, the only person I'd trust is W5XD.
