Hi,
Some of those plug in cards with a serial port use an FTDI USB to serial
conversion chip. They have the same problem as a cabled converter. Been
there, done that, still got the useless card laying around here some place.

Does your laptop accept any plug-in cards? (e.g. PCMCIA?) If so, you could
purchase one inexpensively online. These give you one or more "native" serial
ports.
