Hi Chris,

Unless you can find a IC-375 or a FT-736 with a 220 module in it, a
transverter is probably it. A DEMI or now sold by Q5 Signal transverter is
the best. There are some cheap ones on ebay for around $100 that run less
than 10w. There were some Microwave Modules transverter mod'ed to 222 but
they are rare to find. Any HF rig with 10m will make a fine I.F. rig. I use
an Elecraft K3 which will actually display 222 on the dial which is nice.

Power is subjective, more is better, life is too short for QRP! Talk to
K1WHS, he might have some Larcans for deserving 222 newbies!! Modifying a
Commander would be interesting. If memory serves me, that's a 1/4wl line
with a Teflon cup tuning cap, probably could be made to work but a Larcan
loafs at 1200 to 1300 out and if you get across the 50V line, you live to
brag about it!!

Go with at least a 17ft antenna. There are also 28ish footers out there, I
won't tell you which I prefer :-)

Look forward to hearing you on the band!!

Subject: [VHFcontesting] Radios Used For 222MHz

Hello all -

Planning for a return to VHF/UHF upon retirement at end of year. I am
impressed by the activity reports from 222MHz, and am thinking of adding it
to the station. I have never been on the band and am curious what most
people are using for radios - Transverters are the norm, but what about the
IF radios, antennas and amplifiers? What is considered adequate power for
most work, other than enough to melt the solder on a connector? Besides
W6PQL amps, if Jim is still making them, Lunar Link, and Larcan conversions,
what amplifiers and power levels are most people using? Has anyone
successfully modified a 2 meter Commander II for 222MHz? Same for antennas.
Looks like Terry and Directive Systems, M2 and perhaps MFJ/CC are the
players. What are the preferred antenna setups for non-eme general use?
Thanks for your responses.

73, Chris W3CMP
