Amazing. That's the one word recap. Things started off slow on Saturday.
I worked for the first hour with only 12 QSOs and those were with only 4
stations. I had to go back to work and didn't get to operate until after
8:00 that night. There seemed to be a good amount of scatter. I would hear
stations for just a few seconds and would only get partial calls and they
would vanish. I'm betting the WSJT guys did well.
Sunday, we slept in. We were not on the road until after 11:00 and didn't
get to our first stop until after 1:00. There were more gremlins as well,
but I managed to keep all bands functioning.
That's when things went crazy. From FM08us on Skyline Drive, we logged 87
contacts on our 4 bands. There were pileups. We moved groups of stations
from band to band. Everything came from the same NE direction and I think I
worked every ham station in FM19. I tried aiming toward the OH valley and
got nothing except more stations from FM19 off the back of my beam.
We finally moved to FM09 and 19 but with limited success. The big surprise
there was finding W8ZN/R. Both of us were near the same grid corner and we
managed 20 Q's between us. Each time one of us moved, we ran my 4 bands in
a matter of seconds. This was pretty neat, but I still would support
limiting rover to rover contacts to a very low number. We both followed the
rules and had not coordinated these moves and contacts, but we both still
racked up a lot of Qs in a very short period of time. It felt like
cheating, even though it wasn't.
For such an abreviated rove, I am very happy with the score. I didn't think
it would go this well.
