Deep-search CAN be turned off.  If you want to handicap yourself, you can 
choose not to use it and suffer the 3db or so advantage it offers.  Deep 
search should not be a reason to not pursue JT65 if digital operation 
interests you.  There are other interesting modes in WSJT other than the JT 
modes.
