Curious, indeed.  Take a look at the FCC regs on *towers*.  I tried yesterday to put an end to this debate by adding a note to the Wikipedia article, explaining that US and European usages are opposite one another.

Seems the American tower building code committee didn't get
the memo. TIA-222 uses these terms

"Guyed mast: a latticed or pole structure with supporting guys."
"Self-Supporting Latticed Tower"
"Antenna Mounting Pipe" instead of mast.

Curious why they adopted the guyed mast terminology when
it's doubtful the professionals on the committee from the
tower industry actually use that phrase in their
day-to-day work?
