How much power were you running:)
RG numbers have not been a spec for 40-50 years -- rather they are a
general description of things like physical size, impedance, and whether
the center conductor is solid or stranded. I'd guess your experience
with melting may have been the result of buying using poorly
manufactured coax, or using too much heat, trying to solder to poor
quality connectors.
