Rohn SSV towers are worth the cost if you don't want to hassle with a tower
for periods of 30 years and desire to avoid having it fall down (lol). The
SSV series is a 400 foot tower where specific 20 foot sections are chosen to
meet height and wind load requirements. The SSV series is used extensively
in the commercial world. Rohn provides detail foundation drawings for the
specific SSV sections used for the desired height. We're talking cubic yards
of cement with rebar, etc. Thirty years ago, Rohn engineering would do the
analysis of what sections were required to meet your specs and I suspect
they will still do that today. Hill Radio at Hillradio.net sells Rohn at a
decent discount and seems to be tied directly into Rohn who I believe is
just down the road. Shipping is via motor freight. An SSV tower will
require custom fabrication for the rotator platform and probably having the
top bearing plate and additional shelfs done at the same time is the way to
go. Paul K7PN of Custom Metalworks Inc. does custom fabrication for all of
the Rohn towers where the 45G/55G series is his Rohn customization standard
bill-of-fare. This isn't much different from the SSV platforms. So bottom
line is something like $6K - $8K for a free standing 100 foot tower that
will withstand 80 - 120 MPH winds (all ROM estimates). Ken K5RG
