And make sure you position the clamp very near the end of the larger tubing.
Also, threaded SS fasteners (including worm-drive hose clamps) can gall
together. A dab of appropriate antiseize compound on the worm threads prevents
galling (and minimizes the cursing).

Totally agree with Jake, I suspect this is the problem.
This has happened to me also.
I have put another slot with a hacksaw opposite the original slot as Jake
said. Works great.
