I had a Wilson System 40 (SY-40) beam up for 8 years on 5 sections of 20G
and 2 sections of 25G with no problems. The SY-40 was a 10-el tribander
(4-20, 4-15, 5-10) with a 24 foot boom, if I remember correctly. It worked
extremely well (not as good as my 4-el SteppIR, though). So, properly guyed,
even 20G will hold up a good sized beam. BTW, the 5 sections of 20G cost me
$50 and the two sections of 25G were free! I did spend a lot of time (and
some money) on the proper guying system.

Oh and BTW, I didn't use a concrete base. I simply dug a 4 foot deep hole,
made a small platform out of 2x4's, some rocks in the bottom, tie-wrapped
some plywood to the side of the tower and dropped it in the hole. I filled
in the hole on the outside of the plywood. No concrete at all. They guys
held the tower up just fine for 8 years.

Note that the Rohn 20G and 25G were all in very good condition when I
started.

Be very suspicious of "FREE" Rohn 25G. Very often it is 20G and it is not
the same though it looks to be at first glance. Free towers can be the most
expensive thing you own, if you have to take it out of the neighbor's yard
or worse yet, his roof.

Ok I got it! It will work! Thanks everyone for the input! I just need
to decide now on a good tribander. I am sort of torn between a TH-7,
TH-6, or KT-34XA...Probably depends on what I can find used for the
right price! ;-) As for 40m, I am thinking the XM-240 or 40-2cd. I am
going to have to take my time and start buying one thing at a time...I
know one can find Rohn 25 VERY cheap or free if you look hard, So I'm
going to start doing that locally and maybe start the search for the
Tribander. Anyone know of experienced Amateurs in the North Texas area
to call upon for help? I'm fairly new in this area (From Indiana.) I'm
about 20 miles NE of Downtown Dallas (near Lucas, TX.)

  Thanks,
  Daniel N9WX
