Dan: The HyTower top tubing stinger is insulated from the tower top and
connected to a wire which runs down the center of the tower to the base
where it is connected. The capacitance between the wire and the tower
causes a shunt loading effect to bring it to 80m resonance. The
bandwidth is not very great on 80m as a result. I have shorted the top
tubing to the tower top and extended the stinger to achieve considerably
better bandwidth. I use towers modified that way in 80m 4sq and other
phased arrays. When used in an 80m 4sq I did some relay switching to
use pairs on 40m. The operation was OK on 40 as well as 80. It is
possible that these mods might affect operation on other bands.
