I do exactly that and works well for me. Even regular low-grade electrical
tape seems to last for years in the rain and snow and wind here in the
Midwest. I see about an inch or so start to peel after 6 months but then
stops and does not peel any more. I wrap 4-5 layers over each tie wrap.

I have seen the use of black tape wrapped over black wire ties to shield
from UV. No idea how much longer that will last, but has to be much longer
than unwrapped.
Also have used black medium sized ties of unknown origin and they seem to
last a long time, no way of tracking actual time. At least much longer
than the natural color ties.
