When you hook up the ground wire, you are running some of your
precious RF energy into dirt. I would not consider that an
"improvement". You could also eliminate the RF on the mike by using a
dummy load.
The underlying problem is you have an antenna which is not putting ALL
the RF up in the air where it belongs. Fix that and you will fix the
RF in the shack problem. A longwire worked against the TX chassis is
notorious for this kind of problem. A simple dipole with a choke balun
at the junction of coax and antenna is far superior in this respect.
