Thanks to OK1TP for teaching me a new
phrase yesterday. I was chatting with Tom and Milan
OK1FM, giving them some info about their Orions. It
was about 18z but just before going outside to work in
the yard I asked Tom the following:
"I always wondered why 160 is so popular in OK/OM?"
Tom said:
"Ok Bill, TOP is good for hams who knows the big
Genius loci, on this band"
I didn't recall the expression "Genius loci" before
(my 2 years of Latin were a long time ago), so I looked
it up in a couple of on-line encyclopedias. I thought the
definition was interesting and one that I will remember:
In Roman mythology, a Genius loci was the protective
spirit of a place. It was often depicted as a snake. In
contemporary usage, "genius loci" usually refers to a
location's distinctive atmosphere, or a "spirit of place",
rather than necessarily a guardian spirit.
...and:
1. The distinctive atmosphere or pervading spirit of a place.
2. The guardian deity of a place.
[Latin genius loci : genius, spirit + loci, genitive
sing. of locus, place.]
