Tom,Your further info prompts me to suggest putting De-oxit on all switching contacts of rotary switches and exercising each switch a bit, to spread the contact cleaner/ lubricant. You should also inspect each contact for burned or pitted spots while you have the high intensity light and magnifier at hand. Of course an unsoldered or poor solder joint on any switch lug could produce such symptoms as well.
