Like Paul W9AC I am an attorney and fully agree with his observations.
When someone says something along the lines of "You mean you are
charging just for talking to me" I usually point out that the caller
would not be calling me unless he thought what I might say had value
and that while we might disagree on the proper amount of that value, if
the caller would like further information, I have put a value of $xxxx
per hour on my time. Done at the outset creates respect and
appreciation or serves to weed out folks who are just seeking real value
for free. This is all the recent press release does IMHO. For those
who squawk at the particular rate I suggest you look at Icom or Elecraft
for their rates. C'mon everyone: Let's let the new guys get up and
running a while before giving them grief. Phew, I've added my 2
cents. Now back to my telephone....

I am a lawyer and more often than not, clients still believe my time is
free. The #1 offenders are physicians (like my time is any different?), and
persons who work in, or had worked in governmental public service -- that
includes teachers, military, emergency responders, and FERS/CSRS at the
federal level. My standard line to a difficult physician-client is this:
"I only want information about why I am sick. I don't want you to perform
surgery on me, just tell me what's wrong. Why should I pay for that?"
Many of those who have made a career outside the private sector simply do
not understand how to value earned income. Yet, when asked to calculate the
true value of their own jobs, nearly nobody can calculate the job's real
worth.
