I use RedHat 64 bit and Win7 64 at work. I use application that run only under Win 7 and run/write programs under linux. I've found that Windows does its best to be user friendly, at the expense of various hidden "features," while linux is, at best, expert tolerant.

Eric,

I only use laptops in my shack. It's a very tiny shack.

BTW, I have built over 50 computers in my life (no exaggerating).
I have accounts with several component vendors in DL.

Sorry, but I just can't get interested in Linux.
An OEM copy of Win7 is quite reasonable.

Remember what I said about this computer: Currently it only runs my logging
software (WIN-TEST) and firmware updates to my Eagle. Neither of these run
on Linux.

Rick:

Unless you are banned from doing so in Germany, you can source commuter
parts on ePay and build a machine with little expense. For the OS go to
Linux MINT or Ubuntu to keep cost down.

I know you have used Linux in the past, but the new versions of the two I
mentioned sure make using Linux easy-peezy!

I was afraid you would say that.

Currently my computer is doing just fine for what I want it to do.

Experience has shown that when I get interested in some new
technology, I do what I have to do to deploy it, then play with it for a
week or a month.
And then the interest fades away.

What I have done consistently for 40 years is work CW contests... and
a bit of rag chewing.
I keep coming back to this.
So I don't want to spend a lot of money on a faster computer which
will later be used to run AALog once or twice per week, plus 2 or 3
contests per year.

But these are all my personal problems.
I appreciate you helping me understand the technology and what it
takes to deploy it properly.

As I said I will start with the computer I have.
Once I get it running, if need be I can move my office PC to the shack
for a while.
Jan/Feb are dead months for us, business wise.

This computer is not a good candidate to run with a panadapter. I
would say you need at least dual core and 2 ghz and 2 gig of memory.

It would definitely work with winkey but you are right it might not
work if N1MM is forming the characters. Is your computer dual core?

I have a hunch with a pan-adapter displayed, my computer would not

Perhaps it would work with a WinKey, but it wouldn't have a chance
without one.

One more reason to turn it off in a CW contest and just use the
Band-Map.

That's no where near as CPU intensive as displaying a panadapter.

The contest logging program is a high cpu user if it's connected to
the hyperactive spotting network during a major dx contest.
