Rick,
I am presently keying the Hercules II with the amp keyer from Mike,
and it works well. In fact, it seemed as fast as qsk, although the
Herc is in relay mode - has a vacuum relay, I think. Anyway, I
set the delay in the Eagle to about 3 ms to make it a little less
harsh. I use mostly CW, but have been doing more phone lately.
The Amp Keyer just follows the delay in the Eagle, so this is
a work around.
Also, I have an old Dentron Clipperton L that I sometimes use.
I believe it has the delay build in, but not sure as I haven't
hooked it to the Amp Keyer yet. If I use it for CW, I may have
to set the delay in the Eagle longer to solve the problem you
mentioned. Need more time at the rig to get everything right.
Probably use the Clipperton more on phone, because of the
delay needed on CW.
Steve, looks like you have used the Amp Keyer to solve a
sometimes difficult problem.
At this point, I'm getting along OK trying to get ready for
the fall SS, etc.
Thanks,

John,
The WB8VGE amp keyer is really a sweet product but the 318 does have one
additional feature which I could not live without (due to my old amp). It
has an adjustable post-dit "hang" delay. If Mike's unit does too, he
doesn't say so and I don't see any adjustment on the PC board for this
feature.
Without this hang delay, when running CW, my old amp's open-frame TR relay
chatters like crazy.
I absolutely must have it.
If you have an amp with a fast relay, you may not need it.
If you only run SSB you will never need it.
For for CW and digi modes you may need it.
However it is a very simple circuit that could be added to the amp keyer.
Maybe Mike will even include it with a version 2 of the amp keyer.
The Eagle is the only recent transceiver from Ten-Tec that requires this.
The Omni's and OM7 have a menu adjustment for the hang delay.
It would be nice if Ten-Tec could add this but from what John Henry has
stated in the past, it is missing the hardware to do so. The hardware will
cost about $3.

I have had great results from using Mike's Amp Keyer with my Argonaut II
and my boatanchor 6 meter setup. I use the Amp Keyer to switch the coax
relay, and also the transmit connections on the back of my P&H
transmitting converter. I use the P&H and a Tapetone dual cascode 6
meter receiving converter. The receiving converter is slightly modified
to take the LO from the P&H. It works surprisingly well! I put in the
mod to run the transmit key line out of the Argo II. It takes some care
to get the hang time set on the Argo. Mike's product is well made and a
real help when dealing with the limited switching current specs of the Argo.
