I can't add much to that except during a recent fault in the OMNI VI the
fuse in the radio did not blow, the ASTRON protected it against the over
current as it is supposed to.
I put a lot of faith in products made by companies where that is their only
product. If they weren't doing it right they probably wouldn't last

Subject: Re: [TenTec] Using Non-TT Supply
I am new at this... so go easy on me... but I think the issue is more than
having a general overvoltage protection circuit on the power supply.
Take, for instance, my Omni VII which will completely shut down if it is
drawing too much voltage, such as when there is an awful SWR mismatch. And
it will do this even if I use the TenTec 963 power supply. Why? Because
this type of overvoltage situation is caused by something other than a
fault in the power supply, I wonder if that is why TenTec provides more
draconian protection by way of an additional circuit breaker. I wonder
whether the rig may sometimes try to draw more power than necessary, and
that is when it needs its own protection.
Another example, I saw a Jupiter that drew too much power, and did so
despite using the same power supply you mention, and in spite of the
protection circuit in the power supply. TT fixed that problem with a new
chip and updated firmware. Nevertheless, the rig tried to draw more than
it should have from an otherwise well designed power supply.
Thus, the initial question remains... does one need a special protection
device, such as the circuit breaker (or whatever is in the Omni VII)
along with a generic or other brand power supply - even if that power
supply has its own overvoltage protection circuit. And the question may
be different for the Omni V and the Omni VI, respectively.
Hope this makes sense... my road to Heck is paved with all my good
intentions.

I use Astron RSM 35 with all my solid state radios including OMNI VI
Very good supply with overvoltage and over current protection
