The Omni V and VI and VI Plus have several oscillators that will
eventually affect "being on frequency". The master oscillator for one
and then the BFO oscillators to add to the confusion. If any of these
are off frequency then tuning in a signal will also be questionable.
Worse case, entering a specific frequency by keypad clearly would not be
correct. All of this applied to the Paragon and Paragon II radios as
well.

Later units had the master oscillator in a heated oven or TCXO. If the DC
was applied all the time, even when the radio was off, the oven stayed at
operating temp and thus frequency was stable. If one removed the DC
source then one had to wait until the oven came up to temp for frequency
accuracy. It is then noted the constant heating and cooling of the
crystal in the oven did cause a migration of frequency over time. Hence,
occasional calibration was required.

With the BFO crystals not being in an oven, use of the radios on high
duty cycle modes caused the internal case temperature to rise, causing
the crystal to migrate in frequency and again an "off frequency" report
was noted.

Technology today has moved well away from these methods. The radios are
inherently more stable and frequency readouts are much more accurate such
they actually represent the true receive and transmit frequency.
