Sounds like a bad piece of coax from the rig to the external SWR indicator or
tuner. Could also be a bad connection or component in the output circuit of the
transmitter.

Subject: [TenTec] Paragon output problem
Lately an odd problem has shown up that I would like some help on.
Periodically the SWR indicated on my 585 Paragon will jump to around 3:1 and
the output power will drop off to about 1/4 the normal amount as seen on an
external wattmeter. This is when an external SWR indicator still shows 1:1,
or very close to that. The symptoms were such that I suspected the external
autotuner was at fault, but the radio produces the same symptom on an old
manual tuner, as well. When the SWR is showing high on the radio no
adjustments on the external tuner have any effect. This happens most often
when the rig has been in transmit use for a while on 40m and the receive
seems unaffected. It seems to revert to normal later, but with 20 minutes of
use, or so, it returns to this condition. Does anyone have suggestions about
where and what I might look for? Thanks.
