Paul, do you happen to have a linear amplifier connected?

What you are describing is EXACTLY the condition one can have if the T/R
relay contacts on the amplifier's relay are a little burnt.
If that is the case, cleaning the relay with a burnishing tool will fix the
problem.

Radio is "new" to me and so far a nice performer

Two glitches I observe:
(1) Sometimes, more often than not, when I turn on power the S meter is
active indicating signals but the audio is mute for some delay, varies from
fraction of second to seconds
(2) During a recent ssb QSO the receive would not always come back to level
it was before transmitting. Keying the PTT will bring it back.

Any suggestions or "yeah it does that" always appreciated
